TIM KLIPHUIS SEXTET - THE ART OF IMPROVISATION

Award-winning violinist Tim Kliphuis (NL) and his sextet improvise on themes by Vivaldi, Bartok, Ellington, John McLaughlin and other greats of the music world, drawing from Baroque, Northern European gypsy jazz and folk traditions. Their classical perfection, remarkable audience rapport and an inspired musical approach without boundaries have won them fans from America to Russia.
Ground-breaking programme “The Art of Improvisation” features the international Tim Kliphuis Trio (with guitar virtuoso Nigel Clark and double bass master Roy Percy) and a classical string Trio of Holland's top chamber music players Janneke van Prooijen (violin), Frank Brakkee (viola) and Charles Watt (cello).

Tim Kliphuis is one of the world’s top improvising violinists with a unique and popular style, blending classical, gypsy jazz and folk music. He has shared the stage with Richard Galliano, Frankie Gavin and Les Paul. He has a busy international schedule and is an in-demand educator at competitions, masterclasses and conservatoires worldwide.

Nigel Clark is an awe-inspiring guitar virtuoso with a unique sound, and has worked with the biggest names in jazz, folk and rock including Gloria Gaynor, Moya Brennan, Jan Akkerman, Philip Catherine, Carla Bley, Carol Kidd and Scottish hit band Hue and Cry.

Roy Percy’s bass sound is rooted in New Orleans and Jump-Jive, injecting the Trio with raw street rhythms and infectious grooves. He has worked with top Americans Duke Heitger, Marty Grosz, Bob Barnard and Evan Christopher.

Janneke van Prooijen (violin) leads Dutch chamber music groups Atlantic Trio, Lunatree ensemble and Prisma Trio. She has guest-led Holland Symfonia, played solo with Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Ives ensemble, and collaborated with gypsy violinists Gregor Serban and Roby Lakatos.

Frank Brakkee is viola leader with Holland's Radio Philharmonic and guest-leader with Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. He is also a member of Nieuw ensemble and appears regularly with Osiris Trio and Mondriaan Quartet.

Charles Watt (cello) performs in Europe and America and was a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Albert Hall. He guest-leads the cellos with Rotterdam Philharmonic and Ensemble Modern, and was a tutor at the renowned Yehudi Menuhin School in London.
